AN AFTERNOON WITH CYRIL SCOTT.
We sent our letter of introduction from Edmund Goll to Mr. Cyril Scott, and received a charming invitation to
tea with him and his wife at 33, Ham ilton terrace, St. John's Wood. In this street lives Eosina Buckman and her husband Maurice D'Oisly, and Arnold Bax. We found Cyril Scott a much younger looking man than we expected. He is of slight build and shy at a first meeting. His home is furnished with pew-like seats and the piano is painted blue, and there are two huge stained glass windows. We expressed a wish that ho should visit our shores, and play to us his own compositions. It was quite evident Cyril Scott was not aware of the reputation he has in Australia and New Zealand. He played us several of his composi tions, including part of a concerto for pianoforte and a piano quintet. Mr. Goll is evidently a very special friend, and at his suggestion Mr. Scott has written and published some excellent studies on modern piano technique. Elkin is the publisher of these most useful pieces. Later on, at a musical evening at Mr. Elkin's home we listened to a programme of Cyril Scott's music, played by himself and sung by Miss Gertrude Johnson and others.
