BACKHAUS.

It is related that in the gallery at the Sydney Town Hall recently, while Backhaus was playing, a little boy sat with hands clasped and motionless, apparently spellbound. Fascinated, he watched the pianist's fingers ripple over .the keyboard, and when Backhaus made his journeys to and from the platform, the little fellow's eyes never left his face. At the end, when Backhaus, with his usual generosity, was giving almost another recital to the standing throng surrounding the piano, his little boy admirer was right in the front row. Returning to bow his final acknowledgments, Backhaus paused, clasped the boy's hands in his, heartily shook them, and almost hugged the boy. Backhaus has made many people happy, but if joy and pride can be read in a boy's face, then Backhaus has made a little friend in Sydney who will never forget him. Backhaus's farewell appearance in.Wellington will take place at the Grand Opera House next Tuesday.
