UNSIGHTLY HOARDINGS
REMOVED BY RAILWAY DEPARTMENT PROTESTS IN AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day.. Hoardings at the railway overhead bridge in Khyber Pass, against the erection of which vigorous protests wore made some time ago, are now being removed by the Railway Department out of deference to public opinion. The objections raised to the hoardings were particularly strong owing to their proximity to the new reservo recently formed by the City Council. Tho council's, attempt to beautify this spot, purchased at a cost of £2000, was stultified by the erection of two hoardings, each 10 feet square, at an angle at the western side of'the bridge. The Department later erected another hoarding on tho eastern side of the line at the back of the reserve some distance from the bridge, and at a lower level, on the northern side of Khyber Pass. There are also two hoardings set back from the bridge, one on each side of the line. Vigorous protests against the. erection of the hoardings next to the reserve were made by the City Council, but the Department later proceeded to erect the hoardings behind the reserveV The hoardings, which aro at present being removed, are the two, at the western end of the bridge. No move is at present being made in regard to the others. Instructions have also been issued by tho Department for the removal of tho hoardings at the Mount Eden road overbridge, objection to the erection of which was made by the Mount Eden Borough Council on the ground that they obstructed the view at the bridge and were dangerous to traffic.' The reason for their removal is that tho hoardings were found, to have been erected on borough: council property.
