- . * CITY AND DISTRICT ITEMS. A number of clauses affecting Wellington and surrounding district appear in the amendments to the Local Legislation Bill, which were introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. The Carterton Borough Council is authorised to transfer to the Wellington Education Board certain land at Carterton which has been held in trust as a site for public buildings, and for a recreation ground or public gardens, which it deemed suitable for a school. A portion of the land is to be set aside for street purposes. Other clauses validate the contribution of tho Wellington City Council towards the Hospital Radium Fund, the agreement between the City Council and the Hospital Board in respect to unemployment relief works, and the expenditure by the Wellington College Board of Governors on a junior department at the Girls' College. The maintenance contributions for main highways payable by local authorities under the Wellington City and Suburban Highways Construction and Hutt Road Amendment Act, 1924, are reduced by £50 per annum for each lineal mile of main highways. The provision is made retrospective to the passing of the 1924 Amending Act, but is not to apply after 31st March, 1928. There are other clauses validating the raising of a loan by the Levin Borough Council for the ere.tion of shops and offices; empowering the. Hutt County Council to pay £500 to the Plimmerton Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Club; authorising the Wairarapa South County Council to raise loans for the purchase of certain land, and validating certain interest payments; authorising tho Otaki Borough Council to pay out of loan moneys for plant, materials, and land acquired in connection with the waterworks scheme, and also to recoup the District Fund Account; and authorising the Palmerston North Borough Council to purchase certain land and to transfer part of it to the Crown for agricultural college purposes.
