LADIES' HOCKEY
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP
WIN TO WELLINGTON.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.} INVERCARGILL, 31st August. The New Zealand ladies' hockey championship tournament was continued to-day under the best weather conditions. The ground had improved and was quite solid underfoot. No games were played in No. 2 section. In No. 1 section Ruahine defeated Eastern Southland by 4 goals to 1, and Wellington defeated Canterbury by the same margin. The first heats of the Millie Memorial Cup 100 yards race were got off, those qualifying for the finals being Misses I. Stewart (Eastern), E. Simpson, R. M'Dowell (Ruahine), S. Swinburne (Wellington), D. Moir (Otago), and M. M'lntyre (Southland). The points in the championship table, irrespective of section, now stand: —Ruahine 6, Southland A i, Canterbury 3, Southland B, Eastern A, and Wellington 2 each, Otago 1, and tike remainder nil. No scores we're secured in the first half of the Ruahine v. Eastern Southland match,, and the game in this spell was full o£ incident. Eastern Southland kept Ruahine on the defensive for the greater part of the time, but could not finish off their, scoring movements. They were at "sixes and sevens" when they reached the Rxifihine circle. .Ruahine took up the running from the bully-off, Mrs. Hoppi narrowly missing a goal a few minutes after the commencement. The attack'was not lasting, and the Eastern forward line was set in motion by Miss Edgar. Play ranged up and down the field for the rest of the npell. The first goal to Ruahine came from Miss N. Foreman,- who secured possession of the ball from Miss Bell. AH the remainder of the goals were scored by the same player, with the exception of the. last one, which was gained by Miss E. M'Dowell. Eastern's goal was scored by Miss Dpullan after a fine individual effort. Wellington "(4) beat South Canterbury (1). Wellington made a poor start, thoir play being ragged, and when they did get in the circle they poked about instead of hitting cleanly. South Canterbury showed improved form in the first spell, but faded away.in the face of Wellington's improved attacks. At half-time the score was 1-all, South Canterbury's goal c >ming from a good shot by Miss It. Blissetts, and Wellington's from.Miss Eraser's stick. Much more ■ combination and cleaner hitting by Wellington was seen in the second spell. From a bright forward rush Miss Wilkins goaled not loug'after the interval, and five minutes later Miss Harper, who had just recovered from a blow to the knee, signalised her re-entry into the game by goaling. Occasionally the Green forwards invaded the yellow territory, but their ' shooting was ineffective. Before time Wellington scored their fourth goal through the instrumentality of Miss Shiel.
