NELSON NEWS
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 31st August. The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. Reuben Bird at tho age of 70. He was :i member of the first Artillery Company, and for many years was connected with local volunteer and private bands. He was one of the first to receive the Volunteer Long-service Medal. He was also a member of the, Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade, fvorn which he also received the Long-service Medal. His mother was the first white woman to laud in Nelson from the Fifeshire in 1842. He leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter. The Nelson City Council last year and the year before allowed a rebate of 5 tier cent on all rates paid before a certain date. This year only 2Ms per cent, was allowed. At the last meeting of the council tho Mayor said the rebate of 2£ per cent, had had the desired effect. Money had come in very well indeed —much better than had been anticipated. Altogether £17,000 had been received. While engaged in blasting operations for the Terakohe Cement Company at Terakohe on Saturday, Lawrence Harwood, aged 21, was tamping a shot when it exploded. He received severe face abrasions, one of his eyes was injured, and the bones of his right hand were shattered. There was a heavy fall of snow on the ranges yesterday. The service cars had creat difficulty in getting through on the Tekaka Hills, and at Hawks Craig the cars had to be pushed by the passengers through two or three feet of snow.
