FACE TO FACE WITH DEATH
MOTOR OVERHANGING CLIFF.

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Almost certain death was faced by a motorist on the lonely Kaikoura road for half an hour on Monday. Tho motorist, Mr. Arthur Oldman, of Ghristchurch, was travelling from Kaikoura to the city. The road and bridge are being repaired near the Omihi Saddle, and rain .that fell overnight and during the morning had made the road slippery. When Mr. Oldman's car ran on to somo wet clay it got out of control, and swung ttfward tho edge of a high cliff, which overhangs the riverbed. '»
Immediately Mr. Oldman realised what had happened he jammed on all the brakes and checked the progress of the cur, just as the two front wheels dropped over the edge of the cliff. For half an hour the car was balanced on the cliff edge, Mr. Oldman not daring to move for fear tho car would topple and crash. At the end of that 'time another motor-car appeared on tho road, and tho driver, perceiving Mr. Oldman's plight, attached a rope to tho rear of the car, and pulled it back to safety.
Tho norvims strain had proved too mucli" far Mr. Oldman, for when ho alighted from his car lie collapsed.
