KALGOORLIE MURDERS
TRIAL OF TWO ACCUSED

In the Kalgoorlie murder trial, the accused Treffene, in the witness box, gave a denial to most of the statements of Clarke, who turned King'f evidence. He stated that it was Clarke who cut up and disposed of the bodies. He said that Clarke had set out to blow in the sides of the shaft, where he had deposited the bodies, but when he saw a motor-car approaching, he turned back. Treffene said that he did not tell the police of the accidental shooting, when they interviewed him, as he had promised to be loyal to Clarke.
Philip Treffene and William Coulter are charged with the murder of Detectives Pitman and Walsh near Kalgoorlie, while tho latter were investigating cases of gold-stealing in the district. Evan Clarke, the third party in the case, tuwied King's Evidence, and stated that Coulter had told him that Treffene shot Pitman and he himself Walsh, when the detectives came on them carrying stolen ore into the trash.
