WOOL AND HIDES ON THE CONTINENT.

Mr. J. P. H. Mertens (honorary commercial representative at Antwerp for the Dominion of New Zealand) reports that there was a public sale of wool at Antwerp an Ist July, but it attracted no attention whatever, notwithstanding a fair selection of River Plate merinos and crossbreds. Local stocks amount to 4000 bale 3. Latterly there has been rather more inquiry for tops and noils at current quotations, but little or no demand for greasy wools. At Vervicrs (Belgium) worsted spinners keep busy, but the woollen trade Is poorly supplied with orders, and generally speaking business is quiet. At Roubaix-Tourclng, France, owing to disturbed political and financial conditions, the trade is practically at a standstill. Stocks at the end of June showed an increase of nearly one million pounds of tops at combers, being--400,000 pound 3 merinos and 600,000 pounds crossbred tops. There has, however, been a considerable business done in tops, yarns, and cloths for export. Tho situation remains the same in Italy, mills being fairly well supplied with orders. In Germany stocks at combers are In relation with reduced industrial requirements and amount to 11,000,000 pounds on 30th June, being a reduction of 7,200,000 pounds ou last year's figures.
