STATEMENT BY SIR AUSTEN

CHAMBERLAIN

BATIFICATION BY POWBB&

(Reuter'i T«tegnun.J

(Received 31st August, 2 pjn.)

LONDON, 30th August.

In the House of Commons, Sir Austen Chamberlain confirmed the report that Spain had asked for incorporation of Tangier in the Spanish zone of Morocco, or, alternatively, that Spain be given a mandate. His Majesty's Government had replied that it wag unable to agree to the first alternative, but was ready to discuss the French and Spanish Governments' conditions, un which the assent of the Powerg, which had not yet been accepted, to the Tangier convention might be obtainable. Sir Austen Chamberlain added that he did not think Geneva was a convenient place for this discussion.
