Government Publicity Department Photo. For the past few weeks New Zealand's most spectacular volcanic mountain, Ngauruhoe, has been in almost continuous action. Intermittent eruptions continue to take place at intervals of about an hour, during which huge blocks of volcanic rock are thrown into the air and roll down the mountain-side. Ngauruhoe can be plainly seen from the Whakapapa huts, in Tongariro National Park, distant about six miles from the mountain. The picture shows the volcano during one of its most active periods.
