"A RED HERRING"

WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH ADDINGTON? ;. ;

It ia unlikely that anything will come ef the suggestion that the Canterbury Jockey Club and New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club should come to •ome agreement so that both clubs could race at Riccarton. In the first place the laying out of a trotting course at Riccar-ton-would interfere seriously with the excellent training track of the galloping course. Now. that the question has been broached it would seem pertiirent to ask whether there is any rhyme or reason for three trotting clubs .with. three separate course's in Christchurch. The Metropolitan Club is forming its new course at Riccaiton, the Metropolitan Club's .course has been taken over by the Canterbury Park Club, and the New Brighton course U as itii name shows, down at the. seaside. Three' separate courses is an undoubted economic waste, especially when the Metropolitan grounds at Addingtoh : are big enough and the buildings modern and cortimodious enough for all present requirements. The talk of a trotting track at Ricc'arton would appear to be a a decided red-herring, across the trail. There does not appear any reason why ?,11 three Christchurch clubs should not race at Addington. . Trotting men who were approached by a Southern pressman regarding the proposals made by Mr. W. H. Norton at the annual meeting of the1 Canterbury Jockey Club on Thursday, stated that they preferred not to express any opinions on the matter at present.. Mr. Norton proposed that on the ground of economy the Metropolitan Trotting Club should be invited to Jean with the Canterbury Jockey. Club in

using the present racecourse at Riccartbn instead of going ahead with its new course. :.A meeting :of the ; committee of the Metropolitan Trotting Club was held on •Friday afternoon, but the matter was not discussed. The president, Mr. J. H. Williams, and other members o£ the committee, who were approached after the meeting declined to express any opinions' regarding the proposal. ; ' The annual meeting of the Metropolitan Club will take place on 7th July, and it is probable that the proposal will be discussed by members then. s >
