TRIBUTE TO THE SPEAKER

THE HON.. C. E. STATHAM

EULOGISED.

Eulogistic references were made to the Hcjn.' 0. E. Statham, Speaker of the House of Representatives, by the Hon. R. ]f. Bollard, Minister of Internal Affairs, in replyirfg to the toast of Parliament at a smoke concert held in Levin in connection with the Horowhetiua A. and P. Society's show, which concluded yesterday. r \ "Mr. Statham and "myself," " said Mr. Bollard, "entered Parliament in the same year (1911), and, at once we formed a dose friendship. I found Mr. Statham to be one of the whitest"'men I had ever met. As a member of Parliament he showed himself to be a young mail with convictions, with some of which we could not all agree, but his honesty of purpose could never be doubted. As Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Statham has carried .out the important duties of his office with great fairness and distinction. He is strict, has a wonderful grip of procedure—no member of the House would care to question his ruling—and withal, he has, a dignified simplicity of manner which helps a lot in difficult times in the House. Why, he has pulled up the Prime Minister in debate more than once." (Laughter and applause.)
