IN THE SOUTHERN ALPS
Mesas. T; Fletcher, A. Sutton-Turner, and R. ,J. Crawford, all of Wellington, left last week on a mountaineering expedition in the Southern Alps. The party arrived at Lilybank Station, in the vicinity of .the Godley, last Sunday. A letter received this week states that the party had to carry their swags over very rough country up the Macaulay River, in addition to which they had to ford several deep streams, before reaching the homestead. The writer stated that he had heard that the Godley Glacier was at present impracticable, owing to the continued hot > weather causing bad breaks in the ice. The party's outfit was transferred to the Weka hut (just below the: glacier) on Monday, under ideal weather conditions, and it was expected that climßing would be started last Wedneadr.y. '
