Pressi criticism against his slow batting. He\ visited Sydney, he said, to win-the Shield, arid he did what he considered best. He was urged by his mates to stay at tbe^wickets as long as he could. As a matter of fact, he scored as fast as Kippax did on Tuesday, yet nothing was said about the latter. Victoria was greatly handicapped by the absence of Ellis and Ryder, both of whom were injured during the match. . . ,
The reference is to Mayne's effort in Victoria's first innings, which lasted seven hours for 345 runs, of which he made 154 not out, remaining at the wicket right through the innings. A cable message on Tuesday stated that he played very slow cricket,'many times refusing to take risks by running singles. He was i three times missed by New South Wales players, whose fielding wa3 very weak.
