LIQUOR REFERENDUM
TURNED DOWN BY SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PREMIER.

A deputation representing temperance bodies and the churches asked the Premier to grant a referendum on the question of liquor prohibition, and also of closing the hotels at noon on Satur-, days. j Sir Henry Barwell, in reply, said definitely that he did not approve of a Prohibition referendum. He pointed out the good' effects of which early closing and a strict enforcement of existing legislation had in reducing drunkenness and improving the position generally, he promised consideration of Saturday noon closing. x
