COLLAPSED WALL
SURPRISE FOR THE OCCUPANTS,
(Bt TILIGRAfH.—FRESi ASSOCIATION.) -** ' GHRISTCHURCH, 28th January. An extraordinary accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. to-day, when the ' west wall of the ■" Spectator " building in Gloucester street collapsed with a roar into an adjoining empty section. I The interior of the building was thrown I open, showing the passage on the ground floor and the workroom above. One man j had a narrow escape from serious inI lury, being knocked down by flying | bricks. The Hon. G. "W.^ Russell, who : conducts the " Spectator,* was in the upper room when the fall occurred, but the floor did not collapse. The roof is sagging badly, and the condition of the building appears to be precarious. Tho building 13 the property of the trustees of the estate of X L. Bowker, and is leasecTby G W Russell, Ltd. The cause of the collapse is thought to have been the digging of a 4ft. trench . which was 3ft lower than the foundation of the wall.
