MAGISTRATE'S COURT
James Walsh, an employee of Wirth's Circus, was charged before Mr. C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., yesterday with the theft of a watch and chain, valued at £2 9s 6d,.the property of Alfred Hood, another circus man. Evidence was called showing that the accused had been at the complainant's house in Christchurch about" a, fortnight ago, when the watch was missed, and was afterwards seen wearing it. The explanation that the accused had bought the watch from ancUher circus employee, who had since left New Zealand was not accepted, and the accused, for whom Mr. W. E. Leicester appeared, was convicted. i Sentence was deferred till the afternoon, the police intimating that further inquiries Jjegardinsj Walsh's character would be made. When the matter was brought forward later in the day Walsh was fined £5, in default fourteen days' imprisonment.
