INCREASING GOODWILL
BRITAIN AND AMERICA TRIBUTE TO AMBASSADOR, NEW YORK, 25th January. The English-Speaking Union gave a dinner in farewell to Sir Auckland Geddes, at which Mr. Donald Mackinnon was also a guest of honour. Sir Auckland Geddes expressed re- : gret at the necessity to leavu his post. He pointed. out the satisfactory evidence of increasing goodwill between Great Britain and the United States. Mr. Mackinnon, in a speech, compared Sir Auckland • Ge'ddes's services • with; those of Lord Bryce,' when the latter was Ambassador to the United States. Mr. Mackinnon stressed the growth of the English-Speaking Union in ; Australia, indicating that Scotsmen,. Irishmen,, and Welshmen were taking a prominent^ p*art in the organisation's activities, and showing the solidarity of the peoples who, speak English, irrespective of their origin. • ' s He concluded \vith an expression of satisfaction at the growth. of democracy throughout the world, ' and expressed th e opinion that the EnglishSpeaking Union was especially designed to. serve democracy's cause.
