For the first contests in the winter sports section of the eighth Olympiad, at Chamonix, France, at the foot of Mont Blanc, there \vas fine weather. There were twenty-seven competitors, representing ten nations. The 500 metres speed skating was won by the American, Jewtraw. Time, 44sec. 01----sen (Norway) -was second. Tho • 5000 metres was won by Thunberg (Finland) Time, Bmin 39sec. Skutnabb (Finland) was second. The classification of the leading nations at the end of the day was: Finland, 20J- points; Norway, 17A points; United States,, 11 points.
