BACKBONE OF CRICKET
AMATEUR OR PROFESSIONAL?

LONDON, 24th January. Lord Hawke, presiding at the annual meeting of the Yorkshire Cricket Club, referred to the question. of amateurs versus professionals, and said that many Southern ,folk considered' that amateurs Were ,the backbone of English cricket, but he considered that it would be a direct insult to the public if a man was selected for his amateur status alone.
He strongly held the —lew that it was the duty of every country to select'the best available men, and the most intelligent captain- capable of getting the best out of his side. He commended .-this to the Selection Committee that would choose the team for the forthcoming, Australian tour. «> ■ . '
