STATISTICS OF PROGRESS.
Ihe first progress report on the construction of the Kutt road was presented to the Hutt Road Board yesterday by Mr. K. E. Luke, works engineer. The preparation work bega*n on sth December and the laying of the "black base, course on the 14th. After the first week the material was supplied by the Cummer plant at Ngahauranga,' and since then that and the city mising plant had been working continuously. Preparation had now extended beyond the two-mile peg; and the paving had been completed to just beyond the fjrst mile peg. Altogether 13,779 square yards had been completed. For 736 feet ■m Ngahauranga the width of the pavement had been" increased from 24 feet to 3.) feet.
The work of rcdecking the Kaiwarra bridge has been held in abeyance until next week. The material is on hand but it was thought inadvisable to commence this w.ork during raco week, when the traffic on the Hutt road is considerably increased. '
Ninety men were employed on the work, and the plant in use comprised six steam rollers, two graders, one tractor, one bitumen kettle, one steam wagWi^ three portable tool huts, four motortrucks, seven tractors, three steam wagons, and 90 men. The total cost to date was £7457. •
