TENNIS TOURNAMENT

STOPPED BY HEAVY BAIN.

(IT TIU6BAPB.—SFKIAL TO THI TO»1 )

_MASTERTON, This Day. Heavy rain commenced last evening in the Wairarapa, and, though it will be the saving of the district, which was in a fairly desperate plight, it has prevented the completion of the Provincial Tennis Championships. With the exception of the combined doubles, there remain in each event only about two matches to be played, and the same position as occurred last year will probably result again—the players will have'to finish the matches at some future date, if they can arrange to meet. The present position emphasises the folly of giving precedence to handicap events on Monday. Had the championship events been, kept going, all the events could have been concluded in the brilliant- weather yesterday, and the players could have withdrawn ..from the handicaps to keep s their championship engagements at Dannevirke and Auckland.

In a temporary lifting of the weather this morning an attempt was made to get the final matches under way, but rain again set in, arid there is little.prpspect of any further matches to-day. Rain at Dann'evirke has prevented the commencement of the local' tournament to-day, and it may be possible to play off the final events here early to-morrow morning, enabling. the players to get away to Dannevirke by train about 11 a.m.
