AMATEUR ATHLETICS

NEW- ZEALAND -TEAM CHOSEN

POSITION REGARDING FINANCE

COUNCIL CANNOT MEET FULL

EXPENSE.

~. Although' the selectors of the New 'Zealand amateur athletic team to take (part in the Australasian championships f at Hobart on 6th and 9th February iiave announced their choice of representatives, the personnel of the team is 1 fey no means definite at present, as some j of, the athletes hrfve been included subMeet to certain conditions in the matter I-of finance. The team as chosen, with Rhe events in which the members will ! Compete if they make the trip, is as foli'lows:— ! ~ P. Munro (Wellington), putting the ishot, throwing the discus, throwing the 'javelin, throwing the hammer and the ' decathlon, which is made up of. the : following events: ICO yards, broad ; jump,' shot, high jump, 440 yards, 110 .yards hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, one mile. 2 H. E. Wilson (Wellington), 110 yards hurdles, 440 yards hurdles, and broad Jump. - R. A. Rose (Wellington), one .nile , ;and three miles. L. A. Tracy (Wellington), ICO yards, ■ 220 yards, and 440 yards. - J. I.l' Holm (Canterbury), throwing 'tile hammer. 1 G. Harvey (Wairarapa), pole vault. Z A. Lewis (Canterbury), IUO yards. * S. 6.- M'lntosh (Wellington), one mile nnd three miles walks. ,:. Rose has definitely decided not to ; niake the trip, and on that account /Jsew Zealand will not be represented mii Ihe relay race. * ;■ It is certain that Munro, Wilson, and ('M'Holm ■will make the trip- to Hobart, tmt there is still some doubt about the !£tber athletes who have been chosen, . at* the. expense of sending them cannot " ( be fully met by the New Zealand Coun- : cil. the chairman of the council (Mr. ■A. T. p.avie.s); who is also one of the I (selectors, stated to-day that the team ; could not be finally announced until • more was known regarding the matter of ; finance. It was not known at present ( : whether there was sufficient money in j view. "We are sending a bigger team Qian the 'financial position warrants," 'said Mr. Davies, "and some arrangements will have to be made whereby the necessary money can be collected.". He Explained that, the selection of M'Holm, ( Harvey, Lewis, M^itosh, and Tracy ! was conditional upon the clubs to which • those 'athletes belong or the support- | ers providing a portion of the ccst of ! sending the men. The Canterbury Club 1 \Vas being asked to cover a greater poi'tion of the expense of sending Lewis. ('JJhe position was made known to C. H. ' 'iaylor, of Canterbury, who was a competitor. ..with Lewis, at. the Wellington ; provincial ...championships on Saturday, ' ajid he is placing it before the Canterbury officials. It was anticipated, howI ever, that there would be no difficulty in /finding the money in Christchurch. As j far as M'Holm was concerned, it was ! understood that the amount required on s'ltis behalf was forthcoming. That was '.also the case in regard to Tracy. Harj vey would make the trip on condition 1 that the Wairarapa Club supporters provided £15. The position regarding (••M'lntosh was that the council could only meet a small proportion of the ex- ' pense of sending him to Hobart. Mr. ..IDavies stated that the cost of sending 'the teani would be^ not less, than £40 i per man, and it was a heavy burden i for the New Zealand Council at the prei cent time. The team is to leave by the Marama oh Friday next for Sydney. Final ari rangements in connection with the trip '• are to' be made at a meeting of the : New Zealand Council to-night, .when the ! question of appointing a manager will i also be considered. " Mr. Davies stated j w-day that he had definitely decided not ■to accept the position. One of the | duties of the manager will be to attend \ the conference ot the Amateur Ath- ; letic Union of Australia and New ■ Zealand, and as the I\ew Zea.aaid ie- ! presentative he will be required to urge that biennial con tests between Australia and New Zealand be held in order to release New Zealand from participation in the Australasian championships.
