FIREBOX EXPLOSION
ENGINE MAN BLOWN OVER-
BOARD.

ASHBURTON, 19th January. To be blown from the railway' en°ma of a tram travelling at full speed °vas the experience of Mr. Swanson, a. fireman on the last of three special, trains conveying 3000 Christchurch bakers to Timaru for their annual picnic. The accident occurred between Burnham and Rolleston. Swanson yas stoking, when a terrific explosion in the furnace blew him out of the engine to the side of the track. The driver also was slightly injured, being .somewhat dazzled, but he recovered, and hastened to apply the brakes. He- stopped the train, and a relief party hurried back and picked up Swanson, who was Burnta and otherwise in a bad way. They conveyed him to the guard's van, and sent him .to Ashburton Hospital, > after stopping at Rakaia for first-aid by Dr. Sheffield. The explosion, it is suggested, was due to a detonator accidentally left in the coal. A preliminary examination at the hospital indicated a severely fractured skull, and the victim is Gfcill unconscious, and in a very^serl* ous condition. :
