CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALE
BIG PRICES AT OPENING.
(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
CHRISTCHURCH, 20th January. The third wool sale of the local series was commenced last night, and will be continued to-morrow. The consistent run of good prices which has marked sales this season was continued, and some new figures were set. The total catalogue comprises 26,676 bales, of which 4260 were offered last night and sold with the exception of 27. The wool lacked brightness and the general condition of last sale. The long sequence of nor'-westers has resulted in much of the wool being seedy and earth-stained, and consequently heavy in condition. Pratically every buying country was represented on the benches, and wool appeared to be in demand by all of them. Bradford provided the strongest buying end, notably of threequarter- bred and merino, their activity for the latter being in contrast to last sale, when, however, there was little merino forward. Pieces again went soaring, and some remarkable figures were made for fine lots. Fellmongers had difficulty in securing wool which would show a margin for handling. The best prices so far are as follow :—32£d for merino, 28Jd for halfbred, 28|d for Corriedale 26£ d for three-quarter-bred, 20-^d for crossbred, 27£ d. for halfbred pieces, 17j,d for crossbred pieces, 14d for merino crutchings and locks, and 22^d for merino bellies. There was an all-round advance in price on December rates, notably for super merino, good three-quarter and halfbred wools and fine pieces.
