JAPANESE SQUADRON
ARRANGEMENTS FOR ENTER TAINMENT
OFFICIAL VISITS AND TOURS FOR CREW.
Tentative arrangements have been made by the Honorary' Consul for Japan, Mr. Arthur Young, for the reception and entertainment of the officers and crew of the Japanese Training Squadron during their, stay in Wellington. Ihe three warships,' Iwate, Asama, and Yakumo, which constitute the squadron, are under the command of His Excellency Vice-Admiral S. Saito, C.8., and the itinerary drawn up is subject to the approval of the visitors. ,'l^f,, wirshi Ps are expected to arrive at Wellington at about 1 p.m. on Monday, 4th February, and will remain in port for five or six days. On arrival they will fire a salute of twenty-one guns, according to the custom, and this will be replied to byvH.M.S. Chatham with a salute of fifteen guns. The General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Defence Forces will then board the flagship, and upon his returning ashore the warships will fire a salute of thirteen guns. , Similarly after the visit by the Commodore of the Chatham a salute of eleven guns will be fired. The afternoon will be. devoted to official calls. '■ On the second day of the waTehips' stay a visit will be made by the Japanese cadets to the environs of the city in observation cars. The G.O.C. will call on the Vice-Admiral, who will return official calls. At 1 p. ra : a luncheon will be given to the; Vice-Admiral, his staff, .and the principal officers of the squadron by \members of the Government at Parliament Buildings. Later in the afternoon, some of the crews will be taken round the city in observation cars, while a party of cadets will inspect various public institutions. At 3 p.m. the Mayor will tender a civic reception to' the visitors in the concert chamber of the Town Hall. At 8 p.m. a dinner will be given to the Vice-Admiral and captain. by! the Commodore of the Chatham, on board that vessel. " ■' ■ <-..,. .- On the Wednesday from 50 to 100 cadets will probably pay, a visit to the .Weraroa Training Farm, and a trip in 'observation cars will be made round the city by members of the crews. A second, party of cadets will visit public institutions. • ■ ,-..■.■ Another trip to various points of interest around Wellington -will be made on Thursday, 7th February, by some of the crew. At midday a luncheon will be tendered to the Vice-Admiral, staff, and officers, by the Rotary Club, and in the evening it is, proposed that 'a= dinner shall, be given to the Vice-Admiral, staff, and officere on shore. The:final day of the Japanese visit^ ors stay will be devoted to observation car tours for members of the: crew further visits by cadets to public institutions, while the higher officers will be privately entertained a 6 dinner and at private social events. , The management of the various picture theatres and of His Majesty's Theatre ; have offered the officers and crews free entry to their places of entertainment during the visit.
