PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

MEETING AT ATHLETIC PARK.

As a start of the Carnival Week festivities, the provincial amateur athletic championships were held at Athletic Park this afternoon, under the auspices of the Wellington Centre of the NewZealand Amateur Athletic Association. The programme for the meeting was probably the biggest ever drawn up by the ! local centre, and it was found necessary to keep two events going at the same time during stages of the afternoon. The entries were a record for a championship meeting in the Dominion, and the competitors were not confined to members of city clubs.' There was a large contingent of athletes from the Wairarapa, while Canterbury, Hawera, Palmerston North, and Levin also sent representatives. The weather conditions were ideil, arid the tracks were hard and fast; so that, with all.the best of the local athletes and others of prominence from various parts, there was every prospect of keen contests and good performances. Added importance was placed upon the meeting in view of the fact that the New Zealand selectors attended to see if there were any more athletes fit to represent the Dominion at the Australasian championships at Hobart next month.; Munro, Wilson, and R. A. Rose , who have already been chosen to represent New>Zealand, were among the competitors, and of the others there were athletes who are likely to gain New | Zealand championship honours later in the season. Apart from the championships, which included cycling and ladies' running events, the programme included a number of handicap events, with races for boys, the whole making up a specially attractive afternoon's sport. The meeting was capably managed by the following officials:—Referee: Mr: It. W. M'Villy. Track Judges: Messrs. J. N. Millard, A. W. 0. Travers, H. W. Thompson,'M. Burnett!. Marshal: Mr. A. C.
