MURDER OF MISSIONARY
OFFENDER PARDONED
DANGER STO "FOREIGNERS.
I (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.) I (AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) WASHINGTON, 17th January. I The United States has lodged a vigorous protest, to China against President Tsao Kun's pardoning General Chang Chingyao, the former military governor of Hunan, who was responsible for the murder of the Rev. Reimert, the American missionary, in June, 1920. The protest stresses the fact that a breach of faith has been committed, since the Chinese Government had held the general guilty of murder, and declares that it will make it difficult for the United States to again place credence in any assurances which the Chinese may give. .sDoubt is expressed, however, whether the pardon will be revoked, and it is regarded as more serious coming at a time when numerous outrages upon foreigners in China have been reported. Official circles are very much disturbed at tho situation, which is / considered extremely unsafe for Occidentals.
