THE DELICATE PASTEL
SIMPLE METHOD OF FIXING.
Mr. W. Davis, a Bristol artist, has oeeh experimenting for some time to find i method of fixing^ pastel drawings. Apart from the danger of, the pastel chalk crumbling off the paper, the iitains; caused by damp and mildew have been the': greatest-danger to the perma-ience of'jjastels. Mr. Davis has now discovered that this, disease can be fought in much the same manner as medical science conquers the disease by the introduction into the human system of the germ that causes, the disease. He fights -dampness by immersing his pasteJs in water. Drawing paper con- • taiiis size,- and pastel chalks; too, are ofijin cQmbinedv.witli size. The Davis system is very simple. Submerge the drawingrin-a bath of cold water for two oriAhreelTnlnijtes until fairly soaked • then \Kf^"the drawinc, hold'one end to allow it toidrain, and place it on flat clean paper to dry. ; This .drying process can.be accclbVated by heat. The.result is that the' roloni-s become^-as it were, incorporated ■tliaTpapc'r-and will not suffer..from rubbing. The pastel is practically 'changed into a water-colour dra-wing-.
