DAME MELBA'S RETURN
Dame Nellie' Melba has come back to her beloved land only to strike trouble, consequent upon the inclusion of the Italian chorus in her grand opera company, and the negotiation's which led up to the training of an Australian chorus, approved, it is said, by representatives of J. C. Williamson, Ltd.; and raised specially for the opera season. A deputation representative of the' Australian Theatrical Alliance wants the ■ Federal authorities, to prohibit, under the Immigration Act, the landing of the Italian chorus. The male Australian chorus for the opera season, it is stated, was got together on definite instructions from the ... Williamson headquarters. The trouble appears to be that, while the Williamson firm were perfectly satisfied with- the Australian chorus, Melba did not want it, hence the rumpus. The Minister for Trade and Customs (Mr. Chapman, was waited upon by the Theatrical Alliance. The Minister sees no reason why Australia cannot supply the chorus fo.r the opera season, and says that the Government will endeavour ta .see that the members of the alliance get a fair deal. It is certainly a delicate position. •
