Born in Berlin in 1844, ho was educated _at Berlin Educational College. His.: grandfather wai", the proprietor of a large sugar works; in Berlin, and his father was engagfedin survey work in the same icity.v.;,The late Mr. Jules Schadick came {to ■ :N<jw Zealand 60 years ago, and followed go'ldmin-. .ing in Westland, being one of the first ■ te : explore the Hokitika River. Ten years later he went to Westport, where he joined the Government Survey "Department. He later took' up " private practice as. civil .and mining engineer.: In 1898 he was appointed borough engineer at Westport, where he carried out. many important works, including the designing and erection of the municipal} abattoirs, the erection of. the Carnegiev Library, the making of Victoria squared and the construction of the municipal, waterworks. He is survived'by four daughters, Mrs. Ross; Cooper, of -Ores-; wick road, Northland, Wellington ;1 Misses Annie Emma and Ottile Scti'adick;: and one son; Mr. Campbell Schadick/: county engineer at Westport. v Dr. Ralph Stuart Stephenson, whose? death at Dunedin was reported yester-■ day, was the third son of-the Rev. F.'E;)' Stephenson, who went to Tasmania, andY had the deceased educated primarily atj Horton College, near Ross, where he; gained a Tasmanian Government scholf' arship. This entitled him to. tuition for", several years in the best medical, schools - of the Old Country. He'f orttiwith;'pro-i ceeded to Edinburgh, where in 1890 he? graduated M.B. .and CM. .During" 1890t91 he further studied in the X6n-' don and Dublin; Hospitals;.. - In: :1891t. he went to Melbourne, and ' soon after arriving there was .appointed, senior resident -surgeon of the' public .'.hospital. About two yeai-s later he established a private practice, at St. KildaVinear Melbourne. In 1895 he camei to< Dtmedin, where, states "The Post's ; V . ;..' He took^MJ.^ojSw'ln-1 terest in the Otago Institute^ thfe Otago Cycling Club, the Kaituria Bowling Club, and ;of late yfars,<the St. Clair Bowling Club. About eleven .years ago he paid a visit to Edinburgh'and qualified as M.D. He'went'to, the Great War as principal medical officer on one of the New Zealand transports, and served for between two.ahd three years.
