NELSON GLADIOLUS SHOW

.NELSON,- 17th January. Ihe Nelson Horticultural Society held -a "gladioli night"—the -first special display of these, flowers—this week The large room at the Institute in which it was held was not large enough for the large attendance, and there was au uncomfortable crush for those desirous of seeing the exhibits, ■ About 400 spikes of blooms/were, staged of many varieties. It was a, magnificent display, and one that ; drew-.forth-.-warm expressions of approval and appreciation. Growers stated that had tlii. "night" been held a week or ten days earlier they could have staged much larger quantities. It id therefore likely that "gladioli night" will be held earlier in the season in ■ the future. Included were some old favourites,, but there were many new varieties^ which,wero closely inspected and. much admired,:-The scarlets and reds made a:da'zzliiig show, while the softer shades "of' orange and pink also showed up well: Those contributing to the -display v?ere :—Mesdames Percy Adams, A. Dodson,.Jcphgou, D. Barnctt, G-. Richardson, W. G. Benscmavm; Aliases KHehing, Linley, Niall; Mcesi-s. S. F. Bolton, G. Kemp, H. B. Bolton, K. .B. Martiu, Percy Bolton, G. A. Harkneps, and W. A. Mitchensr. Varieties raised by Mr. Doney, of Murcliison, were also raucli admired. A short talk was given by Mr. Arthur Day on tlio culture of gladiolus, much useful information being given. The various forms of flower were described, and several of tho exhibits were specially commented on by Mr. Day.
