THE HIGHWAYS BOARD
DOUBTS AS TO FUNCTIONS OP LOCAL AUTHORITIES. •
It was reported at a meeting of tha Mam Highways Board yesterday that, with the. exception of Ashburton, all ths district highways councils are now complete and operating. With a view to clearing up doubts as to the functions of the board, and as to the duties and responsibilities of local authorities and highways councils, which apparently are not yet fully understood, each member of the board has been allotted a porfion of the Dominion from which he will receive' ■ and answer any inquiries. Mr. Wynyard will explain any points that may be regarded as obscure in Auckland; Mr. Jull will perform a like service for the central portion of the North Island; Mr. Bruce for the main portion of the East Coast of the South Island; and the Government representatives, Messrs. Furkert, Murray, and Godfrey, for the remaining portions. The regulations for. the guidance of councils have not' yet been finalised. The board has received no official advice of. the reportod withdrawal of Wanganui from ■ the Main Highways Board. '»>'
