UNOFFICIAL ADVISERS
COMMITTEES TO ASSIST LOCAL
BODIES.
During- a discussion on the proposed scheme to. reclaim.land at the Hutt ;River Estuary, the chairman of the River ;Board (Mr. W. T. Strand) suggested that .small committees of interested persons should be set up to assist the board. The .'members of such committees would not .usurp the functions of the members of the board, but would act in an1-advisory .capacity, and as they would specialise ■they would he able, .possibly,l' to give ;moi'e attention to their, own subjects than the busy members '.of the board were able to. One or two men with ;time to spare could work with the enjgineer in. watching the- progress of the proposed reclamation work; at .the.estu-. iiry. Another committee could .pei-haps-' ."give^ valuable advice regarding' the extension, of the board's- activities in the sale, of shingle, which was a business, the surface of which, had. only just been scratched. The number oflconcrete buildings was increasing rapidly, .and metal ■was being carted long distances. He had just heard that a quarry was being opened in Ngahauranga, which would supply metal as far afield as Gisborne. Modern roads required a -good supply of fine shingle,, such as.was. to be had in the Hutt River.' Work for another committee could be found in - dealing with the question of the clearing of the Waiwetu Stream and the beautifying of the neighbourhood. This-was a work which would require attention in the near.future. Such committees would create a ■community interest. :'.',:'.- . The question, of the advisability of forming such committees was left over till there was a. full meeting of the board.
