SAFETY OF AIRSHIPS
CONCERN GROWS IN AMERICA
FLIGHT OF ZR4 TO THE POLE.
(BNITID PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPIRIOHT.)
(ADSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CAELB ASSOCIATION.) WASHINGTON, 15th January. There is increasing popular apprehension respecting the safety of dirigibles, which was reflected by Representative Taylor's resolution requesting the Navy Department to inform the House what scientific facts could be ascertained by the proposed Polar flight of ZR-1, and whether Dixmude.'s defects had been corrected in the ZR-1. He also, asked what the estimate of the probable. costs of the flight was.
The ZR-1 cost I,CCO,COO dollars, took two years to build, and has a cruising range of 6000 miles. It uses the noninflammable helium gas. It is proposed that 'the ZR-1, with six aeroplanes and two sea vessels with mooring masts, shall explore an unknown area of more than a million square miles between Alaska and the North Pole. The expedition will also determine the commercial practicability of trans-Polar- air routes.
