REMOVAL OF RESIDENTIAL
QUALIFICATION.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.? , (AUSTRALIAN - NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.)
(Received 10th July, 11.30 a.m.)
LONDON, 9th July. . The Rugby League meets on Thursday to consider a protest from New South Wales against the decision recently arrived at in regard to colonial players. The "Athletic News" says: "The deadlock is largely due to .the New South Wales League's indifference. The Dominions knew that Oldham and Wigan were endeavouring to remove the residential qualification, but gave the League no lead. If New South Wales had indicated its views before the-annual meeting, the removal of the residential qualification would not have been carried. Only seven or eight clubs are financially strong enough to approach Dominion players' ideas of their value. The proproposal on Thursday will probably follow the lines of the agreement with the New Zealand League."
On ISth June a cable message was received slating that the Rugby Football League Council, by 11 votes to 11, had .decided to remove the qualification period on colonial players desirous of joining English clubs'. As a direct result of this motion being carried, negotiations have been opened between Australian players and English clubs, and it is stated that one Lancashire club is making strenuous efforts to secure the services of Frank Burgc.
