A conference of representatives of the maritime unions, representing thirtythree thousand members, carried resolutions demanding a. Royal Commission to inquire into the foundering of the Sumatra and other vessels, with power to cover every activity of shipping, and also that it be an instruction to all members to immediately notify the secretary o£ the union of anything of a suspicious nature tending to mako a vessel unseaworthy.
