. Xlis Medical Officer of Health (Dr. T. jVl'K.ibbin) stated to-day that the position as regards tho influenza epidemic in Otago and Southland showed at least a temporary improvement. '• The. doctors had had a busy time, but there was now a reduction in the number of cases. For the twenty-four hours ended at noon to-day, no cases, either of pneumonic influenza or of ordinary pneumonia, had' bsen notified. For the previous twentyfour hours tho -following pneumonic cases had been reported:—Otago 3, Wallace 2, Wsfitaki 1, Southland 1. When tho Otago Beys' High School assembled this morning, it was found that 147 boys wore absent, most of thorn suffering from influenza. Six of the masters were aleo absent, and three or four of those present were not in the bout of health. Under tho circumstances it was decided to close tho school tili Wednesday morning.
Tlie Girls' High School has also been affected, but not so seriously. As only two. -teachers aro incapacitated,: the school is being kept'open.
