A VERY PROMISING START
BIG CROWDS OUT AND ABOUT
STREETS CROWDED ON SATURDAY night:
Wellington is making a great experiment, as to whether a mid-winter carnival, can be carried on to complete success. Saturday evening saw the start made, • and a successful start is half the battle. Wellington undoubtedly made that successful beginning, for the weather held good and unexpectedly great crowds of citizens and visitors turned out to watch the, gala procession wind through the streets. They, were not disappointed, for the show was an excellent one, botli in quantity and quality, and having thus sampled the goods the carnival committee has to offer and found them pleasing tho people will try the rest. The motor show in Olympia opened brilliantly, and. was packed.almost from the time the doors were opened till the close of the evening. All who attended on Saturday and to-day will agree with the Prime Minister's prononcement that the displays, are admirably arranged and' are comprehensive of modern motors to a remarkable degree, and that the organisation of the show is particularly good. Here again, as each of the carnival, activities, there is music in plenty. The first "jazz" night in the Town Hall was a tremendous success, too great a success, perhaps, from the point of view of the several thousands who were unable to gain admission, but there are other dance nights to follow, before Welcome Week' closes.
To-day, there was community singing in the Grand Opera House, there will be a popular concert in the evening, also at the Grand Opera House, tho tug-of-war at the Town Hall, the second round of the Skating Carnival, shop shows, and plenty more music. The grand citizens' ball willbe held in the Town Hall to-morrow evening, and the big motor show 'will, of coursa, run on each day and evening, during the week. The executive has announced that owing to the inability of one of the principals to take part the presentations of "The Toreador" at the Grand Opera House tomorrow and Wednesday evenings are cancolled. .... It.is hoped that.another entertainment can be arranged in place of "The Toreador."
