DUTY ON GLASS BOTTLES
PKOTE^T AGAINST PROPOSAL.
The proposed imposition of duty upon glass bottleß as -from, ; 16th September next has drawn -a strong pi-otost from several firms • which deal largely in glass containers. Messrs. Kempthomp, .Prosser, and Co., and four Christchurch firms have forwarded a telegram to the Prime Minister protesting against the duty being imposed; on British bottles, particularly on dispensing bottles, which, it is understood, the New Zealand bottle works will not be able to make for a considerable- time. The telegram states that large orders have been placed in England for lettered bottles which" can-" no^ be cancelled, and that the bottles could not arrive before 16th September; It is suggested that the time be extended JintiL Ist- January next': or, alternatively; thatf the.duty should not be imposed at all on the ground that the freight lanfl dirges,.averaging 60 p.c. should I be quite enough protection without the' | 20 per cent. duty.
