FIREMEN'S BONUS
GREAT LINER HELD UP
CLAIM GRANTED BY THE OOM-
(Received 9th July. 1 p^.) NEW YORK, Bth July. &ixty-four members of the engineroom crew of the giant White Star liner Adriatic delayed the ship's sailing an hour while they forced the commander^ Captain iieadnell, to sign an agreement which provided that each man should raoei ye a bonus of £5 upon arrival at Liverpool. They even compelled Captain Boadnell to come out into the street to carry on the negotiations, while the vessel, with more than a thousand passengers, waited. Twenty-one firemen had deserted on the previous day, and when the chief engineer, Mr. Ruddle did not supplement the force with new men, the strikers sent a demand to the captain for the bonus, declaring that they wore compelled to work an extra shift. Tha captain declared that he had no authority to grant the- bonus. The strikers took their belongings and canmed out side the pier. . Urgent telephone calls to the White Star management resulted in an agreement to-grant the bonus, but the men refused to return until the captain descended to the street and wrote the agreement.
