OVERCROWDED TRAMCARS
10 THE EDITOR. Sir,—With all due deference to the complaint of "Straphanger," raayT state that from observation there are very few college girls or boys for that matter who do not give up their seats to their elders. ' I have seen children who could scarcely reach the strap stand.to let some elderly person sit down (very often unthanked) and having to hold a heavy bag of books, in .the other hand. There are a few who do not observe this test of manners,, but this should not condemn the majority of the scholars.
Mention is made of the alteration of the Civil Service hours, but here also comes "a fly in the ointment," as I have seen both sexes travelling over half an hour late on trams after 5 p.m. Is this "playing the game'" with those whose hours are later?
As to changing the schools hours, the teachers have to be considered as well as the pupils, for their day does not finish when the scholars are dismissed. Although the regulation governing the concession ticket gives the limit at 6.30 p.m., yet it certainly should be the rule whore at all possible that all scholars should reach thoir homes in the city by 4.30 p.m. A lot of overcrowding in the rush hour in the evening could be avoided if some system of "working people's cars only" could be adopted, excluding the "frying pan brigade" and the individual who sits sideways on a seat with Tommy and.Mary standing with dirty boots on the seat looking out the window at some unfortunate individuals who would like to claim the privilege of being only a straphanger.—l am, etc., ANOTHER STRAPHANGER. 14th August. , v >
