MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr; E. Page, 6.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court, this morning, when a-'number of offenders were dealt -with. Jamea Thompson,- on a second conviction for drunkenness, was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. For failing to have a registered number- on his motor-car, C. Higginsbn was fined 103, with costs.

R. Harrison, charged with having boarded a train in motion at the Upper Hutt, .was fined £1 with costs. Robert Pitts was fined 10s, with costs, for entering the licensed premises of the Britannia Hotel during the currency of a prohibition order against him. A fine of £1 andj costs was inflicted <m Henry Hqghes for having been found on the licensed premises 'of the National Hotel after closing hours. - . Fines of 40s each were imposed upon William Bines and Leslie Oldaker-for having;been found upon the licensed promises of ,the Cariton Hotel after hours. In the same connection the licensee,^ Mrs. Paulson, and a barmaid, Mary Turner, were proceeded against for supplying liquor to: the men concerned. Mr. J. J. M'Grath appeared for Mrs. Paulssn and Miss Turner, .and said that when the offence '.was committed Mrs. Faulsen was absent at the theatre. He.referred to.her excellent record as a licensee, and,, admitted that Miss Turner had supplied the liquor to the men, but was not authorised by Mrs.1 Pauleen to dov so: Miss Turner, in'evidence, said that prior to coming to- the hotel tho ' men concerned had rung up and said they belonged to the State: Coal Depot, and asked for a drink. When they came along they said that if.they could.get a drink it would be all right for some coal, and she, thinking she was serving her employer's interests, gave them a! drink. Had the men.just come in>ff the street she would not have given them a drink. In the case against the licensee, the Magistrate entered a conviction, and imposed' a fine. of. £5 with 7s costs. A similar penalty was imposed in the case of Miss'TumeUj' who, he said,1 appeared to have fallen into a trap laid for her.
