The Vossische Zeitung dispels the mystery about the German merchantman Bremen. The crew has reached the port of Bremen. They state that the British captured the vessel, and isolated the crew for three years to preserve the secret.
[Although the Bremen is described as a "merchantman," the vessel referred to is probably the second of the famous "merchant submarines" sent by the Germans to. the "United States. The first of these, the Deutschland, made two trips, and her appearance in United States waters roused a lively argument as to her real status. The Germans alleged that &he was simply a merchant ship, used to. evade the British, blockade) and made much of the fact that communication with the outside world by sea was thus rendered possible. It was asserted that the Deutschland carried valuable cargoes. 'Subsequently it was stated that when the moment was convenient, she dropped her innocent role and appeared as an auxiliary to the Üboat forces operating against commerce. Tthe Bremen, a sister-ship to the Deutschland, set out with considerable demonstration, but nothing more was heard of^hor. It was rumoured that she had been captured, but tho general assumption seems to have been that she was lost at sea.].
