Sir,—Th» following notice appeared in your issue of yesterday :—"Monday last was the 79th anniversary of the hoisting of the British, flag at Akaroa by Captain Smed'ley, of the Royal Navy, two days before the arrival of the French frigate L'Aube, whose commander had been in-' stoucted to hoist the tricolour, and thus make New Zealand a French possession." The following is the inscription on the; monument at Akaroa :—"On this spot Captain Stanley, of H.M.S. Britomart,_ e . hoisted the British flag, and the sove-" reignty of Great Britain was formally proclaimed 11th. August, 1840." Which is correct, or are both?—l am, etc., INQUIRER. . 14th August. '
