EARLY CLOSING
Another. Cuba-street firm, Messrs. James Smith, Ltd., has decided upon early closing, and the announcement was made to the employees at the annual ball which took place at New Century Hall. The managing director, Mr. A. P. Smith, after congratulating the assistants on the size and enthusiasm of the gathering, referred to the fact that this'was the first annual ball that had1 taken place since the war, but now he looked forward to the gathering becoming once more an annual fix-, ture. Mr. Smith then referred to the question of early closing. He stated that the firm had decided to close its premises on and after Monday next at 5130 p.m. each day, with the exception of Friday (which would remain the late night) and Saturday, ■when the shop would close at 1 p.m. In his opinion the concession was a very liberal one,, as the last ha.lf-honr of the day was of great service to the management in many ways, quite apart from the actual business done. However, in. view of tho great benefit that the employees should derive, it was unstintingly given, the firm believing that •it would make for the health and happiness of tho assistants.
Mr. Bear, the superintendent, replied on behalf of the employees, thanking the firm for the early closing concession, and the interest always displayed in the employees.
