WEST COAST TRANSPORT DIFFICULTIES
(BI IBLEGRAPB.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.*
WESTPORT, 13th August. The Westport Borough Council tonight resolved to extend to the Hon. A. M. Myers an invitation to visit Westport and gain for himself first-hand information concerning the coal business on the Coast, li was mentioned that Burley Bros., whose coal mine is in the Buller Gorge, had been' asked to supply coal for a Reeftou firm to send to Christchurch. iThis means carting the coal six miles to the railhead of Inangahua Junction, railing from there to Reefton, a distance of 21 miles on an up grade, railing from Reofton to Greymouth, a distance of 38 miles, for resending to Christchurch. Yet Burley Bros.' mine is only 20 miles frdm Westport, ..with six miles of rails laid and only 14 more required with formation to link up the field- with Westport ' It was regarded as another illustration cf the folly in not completing the gap in the Buller Gorge railway. The saving to Christchurch in the'order mentioned would be 55 miles by railway, and another 50 by sea.'
