A UNION PROTEST
The secretary of the Wellington Tramways Employees' Union (Mr. J. Hutchison) has sent the following letter to the Minister for Public Works (Sir William Fraser):•—'■'
. " Sir, —On perusing this morning's press I ascertained that representatives who control the tramway services throughout the Dominion intend making representations*;to you,, as Minister of Public Works, to suspend tlie gazetting oE the proposed regulation governing tramway work, notice of intention of which you gave-the above union on Ist April, '191.. As representing the men who actually work the service, I. desire, that, previous to altering your intention you suspend decision' until our side of the case is heard. • Early next month the employees from every service in the Dominion assemble in Christchurch, and the paramount work'is the consideration of the overcrowding problem as it confronts the men from a ' safety first' position. We .ear ,that sooner or later, owing to the present practice of overcrowding prevailing, a- holocaust will eventuate, and for cases in point we only- refer to the accident recently in Tinakori-road • and the one in Christchurch. Now, sir, we press that your Department adhere to the. instruction issueVl that the regulations be enforced, or if. you require substantive evidence of the necessity of such we ask that you hold your decision in abeyance until the Employees' Federation considers* the matter from a national point of view."
