JAPANESE MATCHES
AUSTRALIAN MARKET FLOODED^
(FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) SYDNEY, 21st May. 'An indication of the sort of thing- that theso countries are to expect from the growing commercial enterprise of Japan may bo seen in,,the appearance in. Austi'alia of huge 'quantities of cheap matches from Japan. Japan seems to have entered heavily into the match-making trade in recent years, and her goods have appeared hero in ever-increasing quantities. For a while, it was impossible to secure any but Jap matches. They were cheat) and, in these days of high prices, no one except the Australian manufacturer complained. But now a change is taking place. Meanwhile there is an enormous surplus of these matches on tho Australian market which mast bo got rid of somehow. Australia's normal consumption of matches, from all sources, is 30,000 car.es a, year. Last year, tho Japanese sent 42,000 cases into tho country. They aro being' sold in somo shops at Id por dozen boxes'. An attempt will be made in tho forth-c--oming revision of tho tarifT to givo tho Australian match industry better protection .
